I love the site. It's clean, and easy to read. I was wondering a few things - I'm new to PHP, and love how you modified the template like you did.

I myself have been talking to a friend of mine who owns a used car dealership, and your mod would be perfect for him. Is there anyway I could get a copy of your mod? If not, maybe you could just give me some advice on what to do and where to begin to edit it like you did. Do I just edit the template? I've been trying but seem to be getting no where.

Also - how did you add that "Information Request Form" to the bottom of all the listings?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

I would be happy to make some template, our aim was to test the code out to see if it can be customised much, especially with the search forms,
I really feel the only part misnig from the whole script is a payment gateway option, allowing people to pay to list their houses on the site. Be good for private seller advertising.

Hi

It would not be hard to have a payment gateway. I know there is
a company on this forum that has a mod which you can pay for...

Anyway, the way OR is set up it can be done.

Ref: your template.

As you are designing it for houses you will have to try to keep the same
coding std as the generic and the vertical template.

Ie:
try to have the print fuction in the code.
Hard code the links for images and links.

<img src="<?php echo $config[template_url] ?>/spacer.gif" width="781" height="1" border="0"></td>

he he
I can talk My templates are for cars???
well I am just giving some thing back to a great program..

I live in California, here in the US. I was wondering what it would take for me to get a copy of your software for a client of mine who sells BMWs. I know how to do site design, and implement PHP CMS's. I just want to know the price.

Thanks!

Open-Realty is "open" in the sense that it is protected by the GPL. That means that your work based on it also must by default be "open" under the requirements of the GPL, at least that is how I understand the GPL.

So, as others have asked, can we download it and try it out yet?

Thanks!

Not true Justin. Albert can charge for it as much as he like. As long as copyright notices stay in place there's no problem I think.

Imagine, I do a site for a client, he pays for it and afterwards a visitor of that site asks my client to give him the code :?

Not true Justin. Albert can charge for it as much as he like. As long as copyright notices stay in place there's no problem I think.

I don't think that is exactly true. It is true that the copyright notice remain in place, but there are other requirements as well - including that you cannot charge for a license to use the software. Here is the relevant GPL wording:

"1. You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Program's source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish on each copy an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty; keep intact all the notices that refer to this License and to the absence of any warranty; and give any other recipients of the Program a copy of this License along with the Program.

You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee.

2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1 above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

* a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices stating that you changed the files and the date of any change.

* b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.

* c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively when run, you must cause it, when started running for such interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this License. (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on the Program is not required to print an announcement.) "

So as I understand it you must license the software for no charge, but may charge a fee to transfer the software. Example: You can purchase a CD which contains Red Hat Linux at the store, or you can download it for free from the web. You are not purchasing a license to Red Hat at the store, you are purchasing a CD, box and manuals. You also may charge for the initial download.

Furthermore, under the GPL, if I purchase a copy of Red Hat (or download it) I am allowed to recopy it and sell it for however much I want. Thus, as the GPL encourages - it makes sense to just make it free in the first place.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

hi all

read me from OR 1.1.4.

This is Free?
OpenRealty is 100% free. You will never be charged a cent to use it and there are no restrictions on its use. There are no hidden catches -- all we ask is that you leave the hidden comment in that appears on every page generated by OpenRealty intact. This is my calling card, so it's very important to me that I get recognition for my work.

This is a fun project to work on. I enjoy it. Frankly, I get a kick out of seeing sites all over the world running my script. A strange hobby, maybe... but one has to do something during the hours away from work. ('Sides, the chicks LOVE it)

If you want to contribute to the project, there are several ways you can do so:

Find bugs and report them on the forums!
Hack code! Got an improvement? Share it with the rest of the world (literally).
Translate the english.php include file to your native tongue -- post on the forums if you can help with this.
Purchase something off my Amazon wedding registry. Like I said, the chicks love open source programmers, but sometimes my fiance can't understand why I forgo sleep to work on this. Bribe her with stuff and she'll let me work more. :)

from albert. any orders I do get from OR I always tell my clents that part
of the money will go to Open-Realty

Licensing Info
OpenRealty is OpenSource and released under the GNU Public License.

Feel free to use it for whatever you like -- sell it, customize it, turn it into something different, anything is possible. All I ask is that you leave the hidden comment about myself and the tool's origins intact. If you want to be really cool, feel free to put a link to my site somewhere on your site.

Other licenses are available for this software, so if you want to remove my copywrite info from the code for some reason, get in touch with me and we'll talk.

Conclusion
I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who's helped out on this project, whether it's contributing code, assisting other users in the forums, or just generally being encouraging. I hope you already all know how much I appreciate it.

A special shoutout goes to Jason Dulberg -- he's been a supporter/contributor to the project for awhile, essentially keeping it going while I was fully immersed in my day job.

Any bug reports and/or suggestions will only make this project better. Post 'em to the forums....

Albert -

If Open Realty is released under the GPL, which it is unless you have made other licensing arrangements with the copyright holders, it is bound by the stipulations of the GPL. So when the owner says you can "sell" the software you must understand the term "sell" in the context of the GPL. The context is that you can charge a one time transfer fee, and after that the user is free to exercise the same rights as you had with the original work (OpenRealty). So this means that the user can offer it for free to everyone else in the world or he can charge a million bucks for it. As long as you understand that fine, although I still think it is kind of lame to charge for software that is largely based upon code that someone else offered the community for free.

Here is what I don't understand: If you have decided that you are going to charge a transfer fee - how much is it? Please provide some info. I know I am interested in your work, and would be willing to pay for it if priced reasonably - but this private messaging, email me for more info, etc is a pain. Please post some info about how we can acquire this software.

Thanks.

Ok. I am really confused now! After doing more research I found Open Auto Classifieds, a free vehicle listing mod of Open Realty, and on there I found a post by AWD that he is offering templates for OAC.

So is AWD offering to sell an Open Realty mod called Open Auto, selling Open Auto Classifieds as his own work, selling templates for Open Auto Classifieds, or giving templates away? Or all of the above?

Albert - Please clarify.
