i need to show my site on search engines

my sites shows very poorly, i want to be able to show my site better. for example the other day i added an item in craigslist and if i google it now it shows up in the google search, i want to be able to the same like if i have a new user / new listing or things already there on my site if anyone google for the same name or any item from my site i want it to show, if you google a name most likely you will get facebook in the first result, for some of my users i am 3rd or 4th sometimes but now for all i want to do for all if i could.
